Sayoc was charged with committing five federal crimes, including sending explosives and threatening the former president. If found guilty he can be sentenced to prison for up to 48 years, said Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Officers are still investigating whether anyone else was involved in sending the pipe bombs. FBI Director Christopher Wray told reporters on Friday that fingerprints found in one of the bomb packages directed police to arrest Sayoc.

Sayoc reportedly had a criminal record, including having made threats to detonate a bomb. His social media account shows posts that insult Democrats and praise President Trump.

The bomb package consists of a plastic pipe, a digital watch and explosives, sent to Democratic Party figures including former President Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton, a presidential candidate who was defeated by Trump in the 2016 election.

None of the pipe bombs exploded and no one was injured, but reports of the bomb packages have raised tensions at the national level ahead of the mid-November election.
