atynews.com – NATO is reported to have failed to find missiles fired in full flight to Estonian territory. The northern region is directly adjacent to Russia.
Reporting from Sputnik, Saturday (08/08/2018), this was revealed by the Spanish Ministry of Defense who is also a member of NATO and a US ally.
The plane that fired the air-to-air missile was a Spanish fighter aircraft, a member of NATO. The incident took place during the NATO air patrol mission in Estonia on 7 August.
The Spanish Defense Ministry stated that they would not replace the pilot who served in the NATO mission in Lithuania after the incident.
“The composition of Spanish troops deployed in Lithuania, jets and crew will not be replaced until the end of their mission,” the ministry said.
According to the ministry, it is still too early to talk about the causes of incidents in Estonian airspace. “Investigation into the cause of this incident has been launched. The investigation is ongoing and there are no initial results (investigations),” he said.
Earlier, Estonia declared the location of accidental missile firing by Spanish fighter jets in the NATO mission took place in the City of Otepaa, which is about 60 miles from the Russian border.
All aircraft involved in the NATO mission are based in Siauliai in northern Lithuania, and fighter jets that launch the missile remain back to their bases.
