atynews.com – Japan has reportedly issued strong protests to Russia for deploying Su-35 fighter jets on the South Kuril islands.

Reporting from Reuters on Wednesday (08/08/2018), the Tokyo protest was delivered by Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga on Monday (6/8/2018). According to Suga, the protest record was sent to the Russian Foreign Ministry through the Japanese Embassy in Moscow on August 3.

According to local media reports, Russia’s sophisticated Su-35 fighter jet has been deployed for guard duty to the island’s southern island of Iturup.

Last week, Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera in the 2 + 2 talks asked Moscow to take steps in connection with alleged buildup of military power in the southern Kuril Islands to avoid incidents and tensions.

“We have asked the Russians to take certain steps in connection with the fact that Russia is increasing its military presence on four disputed islands, with Russian military equipment also very active (in the region),” he said.

“Russia is our important neighbor, and we hope that maintaining dialogue and cooperation will prevent unnecessary ad hoc situations and tensions,” Minister Onodera said.

In February, the Russian government issued a decree stipulating that Russian Air Force fighter jets and civilian aircraft would be jointly based in Iturup, one of the disputed Kuril Islands.
