Reporting from, Thursday (12/7/2018), the US military upgrades the B-52 weapon because of the possibility that the plane will operate 30 years longer.

The increased functionality of the aircraft’s bombing charge is in fact also part of the Heavy Weapon Release Pylon Program.

The enhancement of B-52 function is done by looking at the competition between big countries besides US namely Russia and China.

Special ammunition for the upgraded aircraft has not been promoted. However, the goal is to increase the load of bombs that are carried. “Officials want pylons to be capable of carrying many weapons weighing 5,000 pounds to 20,000 pounds,” the RFI document says.

The maximum pylon capacity of the current B-52 aircraft is carrying 5,000 pounds of ammunition.

“The external pylon was designed in 1959 and has been in operation since the 1960s, when introduced, there is no requirement and no one estimates the need to carry weapons that weigh more than 5000 pounds,” the document added.

According to a US Air Force Service official, now the aircraft’s bombing ability has changed.

“Top-class competitors are pushing these options,” the official said.
