atynews.com – A US soldier was killed and two others wounded in an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan. This is the third US soldier killed in Afghanistan during this year. “One US soldier was killed and two other US soldiers wounded during insurgent attacks in southern Afghanistan, 7 July,” the statement said of a NATO-led military training mission in Afghanistan.

“The wounded soldiers, in stable condition, are currently being treated, the incident is being investigated,” the statement said again as quoted by ABC News on Sunday (8/7/2018). The term “insider attack” refers to attacks carried out against US military personnel by Afghan forces they train or advise.

The number of insurgent attacks reached 61 in 2012, but the attacks became scarce after the US military institutionalized security protection to protect American troops. The last insider attack took place in August 2017. In the incident, a Romanian soldier was wounded. There are about 14,000 US military personnel in Afghanistan, most of whom serve as Afghan military coaches and advisers in their fight against the Taliban and ISIS.
